Thus, beauty is not an accessory, it is vital. It is just as indispensable to the life of every being as oxygen to the survival of the body. Without it, we wither. We may continue to survive, but we soon realize that we are no longer truly alive. To bring beauty back into the world is to give the taste of it back to everyone. Then we experience our life as gratuit, as gift; this leads to beauty, and each of our actions becomes charged with new meaning. Our work makes sense beyond its immediate confines by breaking the limits that it imposes. To reduce beauty to a mere accessory would cut out of our lives an essential dimension, the gratuité which is the very foundation of what we are.
