Maryvonne Caillaux, volunteer, ATD Quart-Monde

A life-long journey within the ATD Fourth-World movement taught us little by little to see differently, to look beyond and discover something besides the visible horror. It is a long interior process, which is based primarily on the will, by which I mean on the faith that everyone is human, that we hold within ourselves a value that constitutes our dignity. But our eyes, prevented from recognizing it, must be opened to finally see. This journey is made step by step, day after day; one of the ways of getting there is the practice of daily writing. Writing to give life, as I have perceived it, the chance to sink in, it is a sort of contemplative journey. Learn to be with, and to love. If we agree to this process, then mysteriously the heart’s eyes open and see what they were looking for: beauty beyond horror, meaning beyond incoherence.
